The department’s main tasks are to intensify scientific research in promising areas of domestic linguistics and to implement modern methods of teaching foreign languages in the educational process.
The total number of faculty members is 20, of which 18 are full-time teachers and 2 are part-time external staff. The academic support staff includes 2 senior lab assistants.
Since 2018, a master's program in "English Language" has been offered, led by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor V.V. Ubushaeva.
During their studies, undergraduate and graduate students undergo academic practice (to acquire initial professional skills and abilities), industrial practice (to gain professional skills and work experience), and pre-diploma practice. Industrial practice is mostly conducted at schools, gymnasiums, and lyceums of the city of Elista, as well as at the university.
Students are often given opportunities to intern as volunteer guides at international events held in Kalmykia. Over time, students have participated in events such as the World Chess Olympiad (Elista, 1998), International Conference "Bilingualism and Bilingual Education" (Elista, 2002), International Seminar "Preservation and Development of Languages, Language Planning in Europe and Russia" (Elista, 2004), Women's World Chess Championship (Elista, 2004), International Folklore Festival (Elista, 2005), International Youth Forum "Kind Heart" (Elista, 2009), General Assembly of the Caspian Region University Associations (Elista, 2009), International Scientific Conference "Buddhism in Dialogue of East and West Cultures: Past, Present and Future" (Elista, 2015), International Forum "Universities of Eurasia" (Elista, 2015), and the 8th World University Boxing Championship (Elista, 2018).

The department takes into account the national specifics of the region and synthesizes material from the native language and modern scientific knowledge. Modern research extensively uses the Internet. Faculty and students have free access to global information resources in the multimedia lab, where they can find material for research and use electronic versions of modern dictionaries.
