The Department of Russian History was established at Kalmyk State University in 1970. The organizer and the first head of the department was Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation U.E. Erdniev. For many years, the department was led by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor V.B. Ubushaev. Among the department’s faculty were well-known scholars and educators: Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor M.P. Ivanov, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor M.L. Kichikov, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor A.I. Naberukhin, and others. Currently, the department is headed by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Alexander Narmaevich Komandzhaev.

Research interests
The research topics of the faculty are broad — issues of socio-economic, public, and political development, problems of ethnocultural and sociocultural evolution of the peoples of Southern Russia.
