The Department of Mathematics at the Kalmyk Pedagogical Institute was established in 1966. The first head of the department was Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Pyurvya Muchkayevich Erdniev. After the foundation of Kalmyk State University in 1970, based on the Pedagogical Institute, the Department of Mathematics was reorganized in 1972 into two separate departments: the Department of Algebra, Geometry and Methods of Teaching Mathematics, headed by Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor P. M. Erdniev, and the Department of Mathematical Analysis and Differential Equations (MADE). In 2007, the Department of MADE was transformed into the Department of Algebra and Analysis.
Over the years, the department was headed by Candidates of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professors:
- Akhmad Ramazanovich Effendiyev (1972–1974)
- Veniamin Vladimirovich Vityazev (1974–1980)
- Eduard Nikolaevich Gasparov, Candidate of Technical Sciences (1980–1981)
- Vitaly Kuzmich Polivenko (1981–1986)
- Vyacheslav Ivanovich Kopeyko (since December 1986 to the present)
