About the department

The Department of Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication was established in 2002. The main function of the department is teaching Eastern languages and English. Since the 2007-2008 academic year, with the opening of the specialization "Foreign Philology (Chinese Language and Literature, English Language)," the department has been operating as a graduating department. In 2010, the department was renamed to the Department of Foreign Languages, Intercultural Communication, and Regional Studies and became a graduating department for the specialty "Regional Studies."

Research Interests of the Faculty of the Department of FLICC

Comparative and typological linguistics, theory of international communication, linguoculturology, history and culture of the studied regions (China, Mongolia, Korea), international relations, regional economics, nature and economy of the regions, etc.

Academic Cooperation

The department actively collaborates with specialized departments of Russian and foreign universities. Under bilateral agreements between Kalmyk State University and Mongolian State University (Ulaanbaatar), Xinjiang University (Urumqi), Inner Mongolia University (Hohhot), Hainan Normal University (Haikou, PRC), Qiongtai Normal University (Haikou, PRC), Mudanjiang Normal University (Mudanjiang, PRC), Northwest Normal University (Lanzhou, PRC), senior students have the opportunity to undertake language internships in these countries. In addition, the Government of the PRC annually awards Chinese Government Scholarships for studying Chinese language at Chinese universities. The Confucius Institute based at Kalmyk State University, founded in 2008, together with Inner Mongolia University, provides opportunities for young teachers to participate in international seminars on Chinese language teaching methodology held in China. Close cooperation with the institute promotes in-depth study of the Chinese language, development of cultural and scientific research, including collaboration with Hainan Tropical Ocean University (Sanya).
